Where to start

What ProfitEdge does, and where to start.

Some owners need software, some need someone alongside them, and some need their own team trained. Here’s what we do, who it’s for, and the best first step.

What ProfitEdge is

You already own a system that records what happened.

Your DMS, ERP or point of sale does that job well. Every transaction, every cost, every unit, captured accurately.

It was never built to tell you where trouble is building, what it’s costing you, and which decision to make on Monday morning. That’s where the money goes: hundreds of small losses that no report shows you.

We close that gap three ways, and you can take one, two or all three.

Three ways in

Start where you’re stuck.

Pick the one that sounds most like you. You can add the others later, in any order.

What each one involves →

Four situations

If one of these is you, there’s a page written for it.

Adding equipment

You added equipment to a retail business

You know retail. Whole goods margin, a parts catalog, billed hours and warranty all run on different math.

Taking over

You’ve taken over an existing business

Bought it or grew up in it, the first year is the same job: figuring out what’s working and what isn’t.

More from your system

You’re frustrated with your system

Most businesses under-use what they already own, and some really have outgrown it. Worth knowing which before you spend.

Preparing to sell

You’re getting ready to step away

Selling, or passing it to family. What it’s worth to someone else depends on how much of it is written down.

Who it’s for

Independent businesses with a parts counter and a service bay.

One store or several, the shape is the same: an owner close to the decisions, and inventory that swings hard with the season. The system records everything, but nobody has the time to turn it into decisions.

Having an analyst doesn’t always fix that. Someone who knows hardware but not equipment, or only one department, leaves the same gap.

  • Outdoor power equipment
  • Farm & ranch
  • Marine
  • Powersports
  • RV
  • Rental
  • Service-driven specialty retail
What we work on

All three cover the same four areas.

Whichever one you start with, we look at the same four areas, the same way, every month.

Revenue

Sales, customers and demand.

Operations

Inventory, pricing and margin, purchasing and service.

Administration

The office, and the financial reporting behind every transaction.

Executive

Leadership, succession, and what the business is worth to someone else.

The first conversation

You don’t have to know what you need before you call.

Working that out is most of what the first conversation is for.

01

Tell us what’s going on

A short conversation about the business and what’s bothering you. No export is needed to start.

02

Send an export, if you can

Two files from whatever system you run. No general-ledger data and no customer records. It lets us see the position of the business and the condition of the data.

03

Then you decide

We come back with next steps. Detailed analysis and fixes are paid work, scoped and priced in writing first, with no obligation to go ahead.

So you can rule us out quickly

What ProfitEdge isn’t.

A replacement for your system

No conversion, no migration, nothing new for the counter to learn. Everything we do works alongside the system you already run.

A marketing agency

We’ll tell you which customers and categories matter most. We don’t run your ads, your social media or your website.

Your accountant

The goal is a month-end reliable enough that your accountant, your lender and a future buyer can trust what it says.

A promise of a result

Estimates come from your own data and are labeled as estimates. What you earn depends on what you sell, and which recommendations you act on.

Katherine Mitchell
Who we are

Built by someone who’s done the job.

Anyone who has run a parts counter or closed a month in an independent shop will describe the same problems: margin that drifts, counts nobody trusts, and a system that records everything and advises nothing. Katherine Mitchell ran the counter, the service department and the back office, then went looking for the people who were supposed to have the answers. Everyone recognized the problems. Nobody had written down what to do about them. ProfitEdge is where she wrote it down and built the tools to go with it.
